• Ferulic acid was intercalated in a zinc–aluminium layered double hydroxide.
• The ferulic acid is controlled released from HDL under a biological media.
• Released ferulic acid inhibits oxidation of human fibroblasts.
• Oxidation of human fibroblasts is prevented for long time because of the controlled releasing.

Ferulic acid anions were intercalated in a Zn–Al layered double hydroxide. The materials generated by this process were characterised structurally and tested in two important applications: as in vitro drug delivery agents in a system that mimics biological conditions, for which a mathematical model describing the drug delivery profile was created, and as antioxidants for human fibroblasts.

Released ferulic acid from a hybrid layered double hydroxide reduces significantly the reactive oxygen species in human fibroblasts. Inhibition of oxidation occurs for periods as long as 24 h.Figure optionsDownload as PowerPoint slide
