EOF-17 (EOF: element organic framework) represents a new member of the EOF family based on phosphorus connected via an organic biphenyl. It is characterized by a specific surface area (BET) of up to 646 m2/g and a thermal stability of up to 360 °C. As a heterogeneous analog of PPh3 the permanent infiltration of rhodium and palladium complexes is demonstrated. EOF-17 infiltrated with rhodium was successfully tested in the transfer hydrogenation of cyclohexanone.

► A new phosphorous-based element organic framework (EOF) EOF-17 was synthesized.
► EOF-17 is characterized by a specific surface area of up to 646 m2/g.
► EOFs containing phosphorous offer the possibility to infiltrate transition metals.
► The infiltration of PdCl2 could be observed using solid state NMR spectroscopy.
► Rh@EOF-17 could be used as heterogeneous catalyst.
