Physicochemical characterization of liposomes after ultrasound exposure - Mechanisms of drug release

► Mechanisms of ultrasound-mediated drug release from liposomes were investigated. ► The drug release mechanism was dependent on the liposome membrane composition. ► Liposomes based on the lipid DOPE were irreversible disrupted after US-release. ► Most of the HSPC-liposomes remained intact without entrapped drug after US-release. ► Distinctive release mechanism may explain differences in sonosensitive properties.
