Screening of edible oils for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using microwave-assisted liquid-liquid and solid phase extraction coupled to one- to three-way fluorescence spectroscopy analysis

► A new fluorescence method is proposed for the rapid detection of PAH in edible oils. ► Spectral overlap and inner-filter effects were observed as matrix interferences. ► Solid phase extraction with silica was effective to remove these interferences. ► The limit of detection depends on the use of one to three way spectral data. ► Individual recoveries of PAHs were assessed by HPLC-FD with satisfactory results.
