Graphene based hybrid/composite for electron field emission: A review

Building of graphene with other materials can yield the novel hybrids/composite which can exhibit new structural characteristics and additional synergistic properties. In recent years, graphene or reduced oxide graphene based hybrid/composite field emitters have been successfully constructed by various methods such as chemical vapor deposition, spin-coating, screen-printing and chemical synthesis methods. These graphene or reduced oxide graphene based the novel hybrid/composite emitters such as graphene/carbon nanotube, graphene/zinc oxide, and graphene/silicon materials have unique structures which are different from an individual graphene or reduced oxide graphene. The hybrid/composite has outstanding properties, such as a high aspect ratio, a high conductivity and chemical stability, the excellent mechanical strength, the high carrier mobility and reduced work function. Therefore the graphene or graphene based hybrid/composite emitters have low turn-on and threshold-field electronic fields, high field enhancement factors, the high current stability and high luminance. In this review, we surveyed and discussed recent research progresses in graphene/reduced graphene oxide based hybrid/composite field emission properties with particular the detailed account of their preparing methods, characterization and application in devices, also including their challenges and future prospects.
