Various morphologies of SnO2 were successfully synthesized using a solution process. The porous structure SnO2 synthesized by sol-gel method using SiO2 microparticles as a template showed excellent specific surface area and oxygen storage capacity (OSC) even after annealing at 1000 °C for 20 h. Alkali earth metal ion doped SnO2 porous structure nanoparticles were also synthesized successfully by adding M(NO3)2·xH2O (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) to the reaction solution. The alkali earth metal ion doping greatly enhanced the thermal stability and OSC of SnO2. Especially, Sr2+ doped SnO2 with porous structure annealed at 1000 °C for 20 h possessed high BET surface area and exhibited a considerably high OSC and excellent thermal stability. Alkali earth metal ion doped SnO2 particles showed a great potential for application to a novel oxygen storage material.
