Age-associated alterations in retinal arteriole reactivity to endothelin-1 differ between the sexes

► Vasoconstriction by endothelin-1 declined with age in rat retinal arterioles. ► Age did not affect IOP, blood glucose levels or endothelin receptor expression. ► Age did not affect vasoconstriction by depolarization or Ca2+ release by caffeine. ► Reduced responsiveness mediated by smooth muscle endothelin A receptors in males. ► Reduced responsiveness mediated by endothelin B receptors on endothelium in females.
