Age-related changes in serum levels of insulin-like growth factor-II and its binding proteins correlate with calcaneal bone mineral density among post-menopausal South-Indian women

► IGF system components play crucial role in bone turn-over and determining BMD. ► Calcaneal BMD was measured in 165 South-Indian women using peripheral DEXA. ► Serum IGF system components and bone turn-over markers were also quantified. ► While IGF-II & IGFBP-3 positively correlated with BMD, BP-4 correlated negatively. ► Correlations were significant after adjusting age, menopause & physical activity.
