Volatile profiles of fungi - Chemotyping of species and ecological functions

► We analyzed the volatomes of 4 ectomycorrhizal, 3 pathogenic and 2 saprophytic fungi. ► We detected 54, including 15 novel VOCs from the different ecological fungal groups. ► The fungal species and the functional groups differed in their volatile patterns. ► We used the VOC patterns to chemotype the fungal species and groups. ► The different ecological groups could be predicted with probabilities of 90-99%.
