The age-related decline of glutathione levels in immune cells could play an important role in the functional impairment of these cells during the ageing process. Additionally, NAC could exert its beneficial effects on immune function via the increase in the glutathione content present in immune cells. Determination of plasma glutathione is not an accurate indication of the body's oxidative stress condition, since plasma levels migth not be related to the levels of this antioxidant in blood leucocytes.
