Adequate training of the home carers of bedridden patients and the use of protective devices in the bed or mattress are clearly identified in the literature as preventive factors. However, in the sample studied, the percentage of patients receiving suitably qualified help and preventive measures was very low. Both families and home care units should be given sufficient resources to correct this deficiency.
