We studied the prevalence of falls in nonagenarians living in a nursing home and compared the characteristics of fallers with those of non-fallers. Forty-nine 49 institutionalized nonagenarians (89.7% women) were studied. Sociodemograhic data, the ability to perform basic and instrumental activities of daily living, cognitive status, and comorbidity were evaluated. Visual and auditory acuity were also assessed. Twenty-six patients (53.1%) had fallen at least once in the previous year. No significant differences were found between fallers and non-fallers. Because of the high percentage of falls in institutionalised nonagerians, preventive measures should be intensified in this group.
