Unusual presentation of tumoral calcinosis in chronic renal failure: a case report

Tumoral calcinosis is a rare disorder of unknown aetiology. In chronic renal failure, an elevated calcium-phosphate product may lead to the development of metastatic calcified masses. Here, we present the case of a young man with chronic renal failure, who developed a large calcified mass anterior to the right sternoclavicular joint during peritoneal dialysis, which rapidly disappeared after change to hemodialysis, despite persistently elevated calcium-phosphate product. Possibly, the lower intradialytic phosphate levels during hemodialysis treatment induced rapid mobilization of the bound calcium in the calcified mass.
