our study suggests that the structure of loving experience in older people in long-term relationships is similar, but not equal, to that found in younger people or in people involved in shorter relationships. The most characteristic features of these long-term relationships were the high level of commitment and the sense of responsibility and of providing support to the spouse, as well as a comparatively lower level of passion. Gender seems to have a determining effect on the relationship: women show less emotional closeness and less passion towards their spouse than men. Similar and statistically significant differences were found in marital satisfaction.
