Real-time PCR assays for detection and quantitation of porcine and bovine DNA in gelatin mixtures and gelatin capsules

► Two species-specific qPCR assays were developed based upon repetitive elements of the porcine and bovine genomes. ► The assays allowed sensitive detection of porcine and bovine DNA at levels as low as 1 pg/mL. ► Species determination and quantitation were evaluated using binary gelatin blends that contain various amounts of porcine and bovine gelatin. ► Species determination and quantitation were further evaluated in gelatin capsules.
