High-valent nonheme iron-oxo complexes: Synthesis, structure, and spectroscopy

► Recent successes in the synthesis of high-valent iron-oxo complexes are reviewed. ► These complexes model corresponding key intermediates in nonheme iron oxygenases. ► Mechanisms for dioxygen activation to yield iron(IV)-oxo species are discussed.
