This paper examines recent temporal and spatial trends and forecasts in energy consumption, energy efficiency and energy costs in the transport sector across Europe. It explores the links between these trends and forecasts with individual actions and intentions concerning the reduction of energy in transport. It examines some of the differences between stated actions and intentions and investigates the effect of socio-economic factors (including age, gender and income) on stated actions and intentions. The paper draws on three Special Eurobarometer surveys from 1984, 1993 and 2002 to examine temporal and spatial trends in individual actions and intentions. Data from the 2002 Eurobarometer survey are explored in more detail to investigate some of the relationships between socio-economic factors (including age, gender and income) and the level of action and intention concerning the reduction of energy use in transport.
