Extrasolar planets and false atmospheric biosignatures: The role of micrometeoroids

► The presence of hydrocarbons and oxygen in a planetary atmosphere may imply biology. ► Micrometeorites can produce methane upon atmospheric entry. ► It is possible that this methane may be misinterpreted as a false biosignature. ► We discuss the requirements for this effect and its implications.
