⺠Protein radicals are formed during cellular metabolism and in human disease. ⺠TEMPO nitroxide scavenges tyrosyl and tryptophanyl radicals with k 107-108 Mâ1 sâ1. ⺠Micromolar TEMPO concentrations prevent oxidation of cell proteins in macrophages. ⺠TEMPO protects cells from photosensitized death at attainable plasma concentrations. ⺠Protein radical scavenging may contribute to the beneficial effects of nitroxides.
