► Rotenone is a model for inducing apoptosis and synphilin-1 accumulation in Parkinson′s studies. ► The metabolite sodium betahydroxybutryate mitigates these effects in SHSY5Y cell lines. ► Results reveal a novel and innate mechanism to prevent neurodegeneration/cell death.
