► Advanced models may be unsuitable for economic evaluations in countries with few data. ► We compared advanced and simple models of rotavirus vaccination in Turkey. ► Both models produced similar results for simple economic questions using similar data. ► Simple models can produce meaningful economic analyses in countries with few data. ► Where more data are available both models should be used as part of validation.
