Detection with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) holds great promise in tackle the challenge of absolute, reliable quantification of proteins and peptides. We identify possible niches in using ICP-MS for MS-based determination (targeted proteomics) of a limited number of proteins. We discuss research selected from the past five years to shed new light on this particular surge in the analytical potential of ICP-MS.We conclude with our assessment of research areas that could attract future analytical activity within this emerging field.
► The challenge of absolute quantification of heteroatom-tagged proteins is revisited.
► ICP-MS-derived biological information (e.g., enzymatic activity) is introduced.
► Elemental labeling: towards higher sensitivity and more.
► LA-ICP-MS as a quantitative tool for hetero-atom-tagged imaging.
► Quality control and certification of peptides using elemental MS.
