Synthesis and characterization of oligothiophene-functionalized phenanthroline chromophores with symmetrical or unsymmetrical configuration

► Oligothiophene-functionalized phenanthroline chromophores were synthesized. ► Their optoelectronic properties were regulated by symmetrical or unsymmetrical substituents. ► Their morphological structure ranged from crystalline to amorphous character. ► The effects of molecular structures on electronic structure were demonstrated.
