Cold-rolling effect on damping capacity of AZ80 alloy at high-temperature damping background (HTDB) is investigated by dynamic mechanical analyzer tests. Damping capacity of the HTDB for AZ80 alloy can be increased significantly after severe cold rolling but that of the athermal damping background does not show conspicuous variation. The HTDB of AZ80 alloy exhibits a viscoelastic relaxation characteristic and its activation energy can be calculated according to Schoeck's equation. The activation energy of HTDB for as hot-extruded AZ80 alloy is calculated as 1.29 eV and it decreases to 1.14 eV after severe cold rolling. The damping capacity of the HTDB for cold-rolled AZ80 alloy with or without annealing at 100 °C is almost identical, which implies that the annealing effect is inconspicuous at that temperature.
