Differential transportation and deposition of terrestrial biomarkers in middle Eocene fluvial to estuarine environments, Hokkaido, Japan

► The distribution of terrestrial biomarkers was controlled by sedimentary facies. ► Mudstones tended to be rich in angiosperm biomarkers. ► Coal and coaly mudstones were rich in gymnosperm biomarkers. ► Perylene, a possible fungal biomarker, was detected in floodplain deposits. ► The redox potential also controls the abundance of aromatic terrestrial biomarkers.
