Mitochondrial DNA effectively detects non-native Testudines: Invisible wildlife trade in northeast India

• We generated 29 novel mtCOI sequences of three turtle species from northeast India.
• We detected three non-native species, Amyda ornata, Cyclemys fusca and Chitra chitra.
• Mitochondrial COI and Cytb gene effectively discriminated the studied species.
• We demonstrated unregulated trading of turtles through northeast India.
