Chronic insomnia is a common disorder. For a long time pharmacological therapy has been the only method of treatment. With the development of behavioral and cognitive therapies since the 1950s, nonpharmacological options for treatment of this disorder have evolved. The efficacy of behavioral and cognitive therapies is now widely recognized and recommended in various domains, including chronic insomnia. They constitute an alternative choice given the well-known limitations of pharmacological therapy. However, some patients do not respond to behavioral and cognitive therapies. The medical and psychological research on the use of mindfulness as a therapy in physical and mental health has received increasing attention over the last 25 years, and provides an interesting perspective in chronic insomnia. The third wave of behavioral and cognitive therapies has developed and integrated mindfulness, although there are not enough studies to consider it as mature. The aim of this article is to present a current state of knowledge on the role and efficacy of mindfulness-based therapies in the development of behavioral and cognitive therapies for chronic insomnia.
