Hypersomnie en psychiatrie

Hypersomnia used to be a neglected symptom 20 to 30 years ago. To-day it is of interest to sleep specialist as well as to other specialists, chest physicians, neurologists, psychiatrists, ENT surgeons, company doctors, due to its being the main symptom or one of the symptoms of the diseases they are faced to. In the case of psychiatrists, hypersomnia may depend on psychiatric conditions,“hypersomnia not due to substance or known physiological condition” as referred to in the second edition of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD-2) (1) or on their treatment(s). It can also help in orientating the diagnosis in patients referred to a psychiatrist or to a psychiatric unit for symptoms such as depression, anxiety, hallucinations, which are associated with or consequences of non psychiatric disorders, sleep related breathing disorders, primary hypersomnias (narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, recurrent hypersomnia), behaviourally induced insufficient sleep syndrome, post-traumatic hypersomnia, circadian rhythm sleep disorder.
