Accompagner la sexualité des personnes ayant une déficience intellectuelle : l’apport d’un changement institutionnel et d’une formation professionnelle

RésuméLe présent texte signale que le regard porté sur la sexualité des personnes en situation de handicap a évolué depuis ces dernières années. Ce regard a été nourri par une importante réflexion sur l’implication des autorités administratives et sur l’acquisition des compétences manquantes des professionnels pour adapter ces nouvelles postures aux nombreuses situations singulières qui se présentent. L’adoption du modèle médicosocial a permis de passer de la prise en charge à l’accompagnement de la sexualité de bénéficiaires. Les professionnels ont besoin de références théoriques et institutionnelles pour répondre au mieux aux besoins de la personne. Les directeurs d’établissement doivent jouer un rôle primordial dans le développement d’un projet institutionnel de vie sexuelle qui guide les actions des intervenants dans l’accompagnement de la sexualité des résidents.

SummaryThis article explains how peoples’ attitudes have changed in past years towards sexuality of the disabled. This change in attitude has been largely fostered by the extensive work of reflection on the involvement of the administrative authorities and the acquisition of new competences by carers helping them to integrate this new mindset to the multitude of individual situations that can arise. By adopting a medical-social model, we have been able to move away from a “care-based” system towards a “support-based” system for helping clients with their sexuality. Professionals need theoretical and institutional landmarks in order to best meet client needs. Managers of care facilities must play a leading role in developing an institutional project for sexuality that will be a guideline for carers in deciding what action to take in a given situation to support the sexuality of residents.
