New Directions in the Treatment of Somatization

In this article the authors present their model of treatment for somatization disorder and related syndromes. It begins with a brief history of somatization followed by a discussion of theory and research on medically unexplained symptoms. Finally, it describes in some detail the authors' psychosocial treatment for medically unexplained symptoms, which uses methods from both cognitive behavioral therapy and experiential emotion-focused therapy.
