The optical efficiency of flocs in shelf seas and estuaries

► We describe observations of optical properties in coastal waters. ► Total light scattering increases linearly with particle cross sectional area. ► Light absorption depends on particle thickness (or diameter) as well as area. ► Remote sensing reflectance at 2 wavelengths can give both area and size of particles.
