Total thiol redox status as a potent biomarker of PAH-mediated effects on mussels

► PAH constituents induce alterations in thiol redox state (TRS) in gills of mussels. ► Ph and An could deplete both GSH and protein free thiols (PSH) levels. ► TRS alterations are linked with the loss of lysosomal membrane and DNA integrity. ► TRS impairment could lead to the formation of lipid peroxidation (LPO) products. ► Ph and An could induce immunological and neurodegenerative disorders.
