Stress orientation and fracturing during three-dimensional buckling: Numerical simulation and application to chocolate-tablet structures in folded turbidites, SW Portugal

►Two sets of fractures on fold limbs occurred during one folding event but are not contemporaneous. ►Numerical simulations show that the local σ1 remains parallel to the far field σ1. ►The local σ1 rotates by almost 90° with respect to bedding. ►The total strain is the addition of two orthogonal and successive events.
