► We numerically model clast SPOs in several flow types using published analytic solutions. ► We examine effects of variable finite strain and flow vorticity on clast SPO. ► Our model predicts distinct flows may produce equivocal clast orientation distributions. ► Clast-based methods should not be used as sole vorticity gauge in natural mylonites.
