Current status and future directions of gene expression profiling in Parkinson's disease

► This is a review highlighting several recent attempts to generate novel hypotheses about Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis using gene expression profiling. ► Several potential pitfalls for interpreting expression profiling experiments in PD are discussed. ► Novel approaches to expression profiling in PD, focused on sample composition and timing, are suggested.
