The influence of altered occlusion on pro-inflammatory cytokine levels in the TMJ synovial tissues of rats

- We compared two alterations in occlusion of animals in order to verify their effects on TMJ.
- We examined the condylar cartilage thickness and the cytokine levels in rats' TMJ.
- Functional posterior displacement of the mandible increased thickness, while an increased occlusal vertical dimension did not increase it.
- Cytokines' levels were increased in both models.
- Alterations in occlusion were able to cause structural changes in TMJ and surrounding tissues.
