Oxidative stress activates NLRP3 inflammasomes in ARPE-19 cells-Implications for age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

► Molecular mechanisms involved in the AMD-associated inflammation were investigated. ► Oxidative stress increased the expression of NLRP3-specific mRNA in ARPE-19 cells. ► Oxidative stress increased the production of IL-1β and IL-18. ► Caspase-1 inhibitor decreased the production of IL-1β and IL-18. ► First time evidence associating NLRP3 inflammasomes with retinal pigment epithelium.
