Wintertime connections between extreme wind patterns in Spain and large-scale geopotential height field

► Spanish wind speed patterns in wintertime are obtained using principal components. ► Connections of PC wind speed field-geopotential height at 1000 hPa are analyzed. ► Large scale modes-wind speed relationships are obtained by cumulated frequency values. ► Large-scale atmospheric patterns more dominant in the Spanish wind field are shown.
