Microbiological assessment of river water used for the irrigation of fresh produce in a sub-urban community in Sobantu, South Africa

► River water used for irrigation in KwaZulu-Natal was analyzed microbiologically. ► Hygiene indicators were quantified in river water samples and on irrigated produce. ► Fecal coliforms in river water exceeded WHO guideline values for safe irrigation. ► The river water is therefore not suitable for irrigation. ► A transfer of bacteria from irrigation water onto produce might take place.
