► We studied spreading and stable volcanic cones deformed by strike-slip faults. ► The conclusions of this study are based on analogue models. ► Transpressional to transtensional regional faults form Sigmoid-I fault in a volcano. ► Most of the translation movements in the cone are organized around Sigmoid-I fault.
