The deformation of porous sandstones; are Byerlee friction and the critical state line equivalent?

► New experimental rock mechanics data for porous sandstones are presented. ► The critical state behaviour is the same for rocks of equal porosity and grain size. ► Comparing critical state and frictional sliding data shows they are near-equivalent. ► Porosity × grain size approximately predicts sandstone properties.
