► Eleven outcomes spanning clinical and functional domains are important to persons with schizophrenia and primary caregivers. ► Symptom control is a very important outcome for persons with schizophrenia. ► Social functioning, employment and activities of daily living are prioritised outcomes for both groups. ► Interventions for schizophrenia in India need to target multiple outcomes.
