► Biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests were conducted using two wastes. ► Effect of inoculum pre-incubation and inoculum sources on BMP test was evaluated. ► No significant differences in the BMP results between pre or non-incubated inoculum. ► Inoculum source and waste to inoculum ratio play a significant role in test results. ► Seed source for a waste treatability underestimates the ultimate biodegradability.
