Efficient extraction of canthaxanthin from Escherichia coli by a 2-step process with organic solvents

► Repeat application of a single solvent was not suitable for efficient extraction. ► Sequential application of methanol and acetone, enables complete extraction. ► Extraction efficiency was influenced significantly by solvent order. ► Efficiency was maintained over solvent to biomass ratio of 100:1 to 55:1.
