Mania was confused with both madness and delusion during the 19th century. Nowadays little mention is made of mania, or else it is referred to as a mood disorder. Nevertheless, a number of elements (metonymic dimension of language, absence of the “point de capiton”, etc.) warrant envisaging it as a psychosis.
