In France, the “Clayes-Leonetti law” modifies the practices of care and the reflections of the teams. In particular, it requires the presence of a consulting doctor during the exchanges dealing with the introduction of continuous deep sedation until death. This positions the palliative care teams in the front line, because of the novelty and the complexity of these situations. Our team is regularly consulted, and reflecting on several clinical cases makes us want to explore how the law modifies our practices. However, the latest legislative changes generate new situations, causing ethical and clinical dilemmas or moral difficulties for everyone. This dilemma must be set in motion daily within the care teams, in order to reach a reassuring clinical practice for patients and caregivers.
