This study first analyzes the serious adverse events that led to hospitalization. They cause 3 to 5 % of all hospital stays, of which two thirds are generated following a care in general practice, with the remainder resulting from a previous hospitalization. 46.2 % of the 195 serious adverse events causing an hospitalization were judged by investigators and care teams to be avoidable, especially if they were related to health products. In a second step, the analysis focuses on the serious adverse events identified during hospitalization. The density of incidence is estimated at 6.6 per 1 000 hospital days. 35.4 % of the 255 serious adverse events identified during hospitalisation were judged as preventable by investigators and care teams. The analysis of latent causes highlighted the essential role of organization and communication.
