Highly selective and ultrasensitive detection of nitrite based on fluorescent gold nanoclusters

► We developed a novel turn-off fluorescent nitrite sensor based on gold nanocluster. ► The sensor exhibits wide detection range, good selectivity, and high sensitivity. ► The detection limit can be as low as 1 nM. ► High quenching efficiency for nitrite detection was obtained in neutral media.
