Strength degradation of non-persistently jointed rockmass

• The strength of fractured cores increases with confinement and approaches that of intact rock.
• GSI-based Hoek–Brown failure criterion underestimates the confined strength of fractured cores.
• A high value of mb and a lower value of a provide a good fit to the strength of fractured cores.
