A new nail penetration test for estimation of rock strength

• A new and simple apparatus for the nail penetration test is introduced.
• The apparatus manufactured during the current study for the nail penetration test has a good potential for standardization.
• Using the new apparatus, several nail penetration tests were carried out on 10 types of rocks.
• A strong correlation exists between the results of our nail penetration test and the unconfined compressive strength test.
